We made a lot of progress today and I decided to post a transcript of our chat as to keep everybody in the loop. News is April, Nicetry30 is Rob and me is heperi tikitere mita.
3:13 PM nicetry30: You’ve been invited to this chat room!
yeah im pretty sure we will make the google map thing
me: cool
3:14 PM what method will we use?
nicetry30: but i was thinking like on http://rethinkcollegepark.net/blog
3:15 PM on the right where they have like an image map
linked to categories
but at the top maybe
as part of the header
were not so sure
3:16 PM i think we can make the html in dreamweaver
3:17 PM me: how did that person do it
nicetry30: dont know
brauerranch: They started with the text links down the page further almost certainly
3:18 PM and with that working, and the URL’s in hand that they wanted on their iamge map, used something like dreamweaver or hand-coding to make the imagemap
nicetry30: true
3:19 PM News: We could do that same kind of set up, I’m sure.
3:20 PM me: yeah i think we can do that
Stephanie: we definitely could
me: who of us are most skilled in graphic design
News: And who has Dreamweaver, assuming we use that.
3:21 PM me: i got that
and im pretty ok on it
brauerranch: Photoshop and imageready can do this sort of thing too…
Stephanie: i’m ok with photoshop
brauerranch: as well as other utilites..
me: im pretty skilled on photoshop
Stephanie: what about tahnee?
3:22 PM i know we talked about having her do some photo stuff, but i don’t know her skillz
me: i could get my friend who helped me and rob out with flash
Stephanie: that’s cool
3:23 PM News: Do we want to set up a time to really tackle the map head on?
nicetry30: i posted some possible angles on the blog
they can be cut and improved as we like
nicetry30: i would like it to be kind of neat looking
Stephanie: that’s not a question
nicetry30: and artrsyish
3:25 PM Stephanie: ok….
i think i knew what that meant
nicetry30: http://jour493.wordpress.com/
3:26 PM Stephanie: i like the last angle you posted
3:27 PM News: I agree. Or the first.
me: yeah first and last ones are the best
Stephanie: totally
in agreement
nicetry30: cool
me: do we want it in the collegepark blog style?
Stephanie: the whole website?
3:28 PM News: I think it could work that way.
nicetry30: i think make it look better
me: just the map
nicetry30: we can
me: i was talking about
Stephanie: oh
News: Ah
me: the rest of the site looks rather generic
nicetry30: id like a cleaner map
Stephanie: TOTALLY
News: agreed.
3:29 PM me: how so
News: We could spice it up color/theme wise. But plain might work in our favor since this is supposed to be c ommunity site, right?
nicetry30: maybe kind od like the one were workin ot the sun?
me: so you want specific land marks
nicetry30: some graphic icons
Stephanie: that could work
nicetry30: maybe
the school would probably have an icon of some sort
3:30 PM Stephanie: big landmarks probably should
nicetry30: and certain buildings or neigborhoods
Stephanie: yes
News: What else would be considered a big landmark?
Stephanie: the hospital maybe
News: Other than UNLV
me: unlv
Stephanie: if it’s in there
me: lol
galleria mall
Stephanie: boulevard
News: boulevard, lol
Stephanie: you mean
me: sorry
yeah
me: theres a crime google map overlay for this area
Stephanie: ooh
that’s cool and important
me: we could incorporate that, or simply link to it
News: Definitely.
3:32 PM nicetry30: well i think this map and the google map would be different things
i was thinking of the more graphic clean one just as a sort of navigation tool
Stephanie: so should we have two maps or just one and link to the crime one?
me: right
nicetry30: the google map would be useful
Stephanie: it would, most definitely
nicetry30: 2
Stephanie: ok
3:33 PM me: where is the list of content derek made?
nicetry30: haha
i think derek has it
News: It should be on the blog, shouldn’t it?
Stephanie: yes
me: i dont think its up there
Stephanie: it’s not on the blog
it’s in derek’s notebook
3:34 PM News: Ah
me: we really need that in order to get an impression of the overall site
at the moment we can only work on individual elements
3:35 PM Stephanie: yeah
luckily the map is a huge element
me: yah
Stephanie: but i still want to know what else they have.
News: We have Flikr stuff for the MP project.
3:36 PM me: we should probably make it biggr than the the one on the college park site too
News: I remember that being posted. We could also trying to integrate those photos in, maybe?
Stephanie: to the map?
or the site itself?
me: map
Stephanie: like how?
charlotteanne.lucas: the MdPkwy stuff was on topic areas — there was Education, Health, Religion and Spirituality, Government, etc.
3:37 PM each area had various components — including video, text, photos and audio
nicetry30: the google map yes
charlotteanne.lucas: so part of the question is taxonomy — site structure, and the other question is visual (ie: google map)
3:38 PM nicetry30: we could just link to items from the google map
of course
we can put smll pictures and posts in there
but i wouldnt over do it
charlotteanne.lucas: if you make a visual navigation on the front, then you still need to manage the site structure so people get where they want to go
Stephanie: yes
3:39 PM nicetry30: the google map would not be our main navigation option
i dont think
but a useful tool
on like a different ‘page’
me: so was most of the content they created conceptual?
charlotteanne.lucas: yes — and you know that it doesn’t hurt to give users more than one way to get where they are going
nicetry30: like map, about us, home, media, etc
yep
charlotteanne.lucas: media? what is englis for that?
3:40 PM me: cause concepts like culture and spirituality are difficult to portray on a map
Stephanie: just a bit
charlotteanne.lucas: icons
nicetry30: pics and videos
oh yeah
haha
3:41 PM well in the culture and spirituality stuff about certain places?
or are thy overall type things?
3:42 PM charlotteanne.lucas: so while one or more of you do the visualization thing, other folks need to build out the taxonomy that we worked with on Thursday
when i said icons i meant like a little church/mosque/synagogue icon
nicetry30: yeah
we can do that
3:43 PM charlotteanne.lucas: school i a little school house, health is a red cross or something
me: hmm
charlotteanne.lucas: but don’t forget to go look at what Josh said about text and links and how important that is …
3:46 PM me: i think the first thing we really need to do is gather the content for this site, that way we know how we will categorize the content and what icons we will use
3:47 PM brauerranch: Heperi is on to something here… Everybody know the 3 rules of real estate?
News: location location location?
nicetry30: price?
3:48 PM brauerranch: yup…. Apriil nailed it… and the three rules of websites?
content… content… content
me: lol
nicetry30: indeed
3:51 PM me: so one of us should probably email derek or ardyth and ask for a list/description of the content
3:52 PM or the actual content
3:55 PM charlotteanne.lucas: start with this: each of these represents places (location) and content (stories, video, photos). Education (schools, videos and stories about education), Religion/Spirituality (places and video and audio about them), Government (voting places, city council reps); Health (clinics, calendar of events, stories),
(I watched their presentations, so I remember some of it)
3:56 PM me: ahh
3:57 PM charlotteanne.lucas: email derek, but just in case he is off the grid, start with the topics and ideas above. i can’t remember all, but I do remember much of it
News: I’ll e-mail Derek.
Unless someone has already.
nicetry30: nope
3:58 PM News: k. I’m on it.
3:59 PM charlotteanne.lucas@gmail.com has left
4:03 PM charlotteanne.lucas@gmail.com has joined
4:05 PM charlotteanne.lucas: i switched computers without thinking of the consequences. :’(
News: You didn’t miss anything.
4:08 PM nicetry30: were kajiggering the header image
4:09 PM stupid style c
| s |
4:19 PM nicetry30: well we did something
4:20 PM but that woul be the general idea
click the areas in the header
and see the content for each area
4:21 PM me: the header is interactive?
4:22 PM News: doesn’t look like it
nicetry30: no
but it outta be
me: lol
nicetry30: just an illustration of sorts
me: right
you totally pulled a fast one on me
News: lol
me: im all like clicking the pic
nicetry30: haha
4:23 PM me: wondering what’s wrong with my computer4:42 PM nicetry30: we figured that it is very difficult to make an interactive header
charlotteanne.lucas: ok — that is progress
nicetry30: so we need to do a sidebar
News: Bummer.
charlotteanne.lucas: k
nicetry30: it is very doable in the sidebar tho
4:49 PM charlotteanne.lucas: the header being an image is a fine thing
nicetry30: so yeah
hepi will work on the image map
at some point
reight hep?
4:51 PM me: yeah i playing with dreamweaver right now
Stephanie: awesome
me: *i’m
News: Should we get Tahnee to do a fancy new header since it’ll be a static image again?
nicetry30: i think the maryland project will use wordpress
Stephanie: i think we should
nicetry30: and the jms can use drupal
4:52 PM yeah
News: I like this idea.
nicetry30: we will need a neat header
Stephanie: us all smiling should be the header
4:53 PM nicetry30: haha
News: haha.
I don’t smile.
nicetry30: thatll scare people
jk
Stephanie: hahahaha
nicetry30: titles!
News: I’ll e-mail Tahnee and see if she can put together a header, cool? Send her the dimensions.
4:54 PM nicetry30: we dont have a definate theme yet
so not sure on the dimensions
News: So we’re not going with the heart one? lol
nicetry30: but it will likely be letterbox type picture
Stephanie: uh
nicetry30: maybe
Stephanie: there’s some issues with the header
and adding our own
custom one
nicetry30: yeah we would have to stick with the heart cloud
4:55 PM Stephanie: hehehe
nicetry30: http://stephaniesays.org/
awww
its messed up due to the wrong sized map
Stephanie: but still good
News: It’s a start!
4:56 PM nicetry30: and im not so sure about the little heart ions
haha
Stephanie: yeah….
damn css style code
4:57 PM brauerranch: might want to look at the Tapestry or News Flash themes to do that
4:58 PM nicetry30: cool lookin
brauerranch: and for some quick demos http://demo.roopletheme.com/
nicetry30: neat
4:59 PM brauerranch: http://demo.roopletheme.com/tapestry/content/21-using-tapestry-regions
5:00 PM nicetry30: some customization there
i like
me: hey folks im currently at work and messing around with dreamweaver so my attention is all over the place, if you need to get me to do something send a msg to my AIM account
Stephanie: k
News: Got it.
nicetry30: aye
